Pennzoil Presents Know Your Oil.
Shanna Simmons, Mechanical Engineer
[Audio]
Fuel economy is improved when an engine’s mechanical parts operate more efficiently. Motor oil helps this by keeping engine parts clean.

Using a lower viscosity motor oil can also help improve fuel economy. What’s viscosity? Well imagine a pool filled with water. Now imagine a pool filled with honey.
Shanna places a beaker of water and a beaker of honey on the workbench in front of herself.
[Audio]
It’s much easier to swim through a pool filled with water which has a low or thin viscosity than a pool filled with honey which has a very high or thick viscosity.
Shanna compresses a metal spring in the water then in the honey, which offers much greater resistance.
[Audio]
Now my hands are dirty. It’s much easier for an engine to pump a thinner oil which is one of the reasons why many new vehicles require lower viscosity engine oils. The technology that goes into building engines is constantly changing and reacting to government regulations on both fuel economy and emission standards. Many of these technologies such as variable valve timing and turbochargers are incredibly sensitive to the build-up of carbon deposits. Pennzoil synthetics are formulated to help keep engines clean. In fact, compared to a dirty engine, Pennzoil synthetics can help you drive on average an extra 550 miles per year.
