Title: PENNZOIL: JOYRIDE
Video name: PENN-2016-105-VIEWING_UNSLATED
Under a blistering sun, jagged ridges surround a sandy desert studded with rocky mounds. A dusty breeze blows through dry grass and other scrub. Covered in earth-toned scales, a lizard scuttles off as the wind intensifies. A helicopter descends and hovers above the ground. A man slides down a rope, his boots landing on the sand with a thud. Carrying a backpack laden with a climbing rope and other gear, the man wears a ball cap, sunglasses, and a tan scarf over his mouth. He stares toward a nearby road sign bearing a Pennzoil logo - a yellow oval containing a red Liberty Bell with Pennzoil printed across it in black. The sign reads, “High Temperature Testing Facility. Restricted Area Warning. Facility Access by Permit Only.” The man glances at a handheld G-P-S with a flashing icon before hiking off. He stoops and grabs a chain lying in the sand then pulls it taut. He drags the cover off a rectangular hole then climbs down inside. The man uses a flashlight while walking up a circular tunnel. Later, he pushes up a floor grate then climbs into an empty garage. He approaches a yellow sports utility vehicle and slips into the driver’s seat. After finding an ignition key hidden behind the sun visor, he starts the Jeep. A yellow light flashes as the garage door opens. Using a wireless uplink, the man begins recording the vehicle’s performance on a laptop. He shifts into gear and revs the engine. The Jeep bursts over the top of a hill, dust billowing from its grille and tires as it arcs through the air in slow motion. As all four tires make contact with the ground again, the Jeep zooms off at normal speed.

The Jeep leaves a plume of dust in its wake as it zips across the flat desert. The speedometer needle rises toward 100 miles per hour. Spinning the steering wheel, the driver performs a wide, skidding turn. The Jeep’s large, thick tires churn up clods of dirt. Hanging from the rearview mirror, a Pennzoil air freshener twists in the breeze. The driver grips the steering wheel with both hands, which are sheathed in leather gloves. The Jeep powers over sand dunes, swerving back and forth along the uneven terrain. Under the chassis, thick springs compress as the Jeep’s shocks absorb each impact. The driver slides seamlessly onto a paved road. Suddenly, he pulls the parking brake and turns onto a side road, passing a Pennzoil billboard. The steering wheel shakes as he speeds past bushes, cacti, and small trees. The speedometer spikes as the Jeep goes momentarily airborne. After landing, the driver fishtails briefly then regains control. Meanwhile, the laptop records the Jeep’s performance: “Ambient temperature—123 degrees Fahrenheit. Torque—220. Oil Temperature—223.” After skipping over a series of moguls, the Jeep skids to a halt in a cloud of dust. The driver shifts gears then powers up a steep hill of loose rocks. Hunks of stone crumble and slide away as the Jeep accelerates up the slope. Reaching the very top of the ridge, the driver stops atop its crest and looks out over miles of flat, sandy desert.
The Jeep powers over another hill and disappears.
